Anon-ThewayIlikeit added these pithy words on Jun 24 09 at 1:35 pmI just dont like the fact that I know this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing – as soon as their are enough users – location based advertising will start. The benefit is ultimately not the consumers. I like my privacy Big Brother
Uno De Waal added these pithy words on Jun 24 09 at 1:40 pmI think it’s too late for that! The ads have already started used hyperlocal geotargeting. I actually think it’s quite innovative and forward thinking – definitely the first people to do it.
Anon-ThewayIlikeit added these pithy words on Jun 24 09 at 1:52 pm@Uno Dont get me wrong – its killer! Seriously dam amazing and the future of mobile – but the future scares me a little bit. Privacy will in-response become currency and consumers will (and already are thanks to tech like PVR’s) paying more for less (advertising). In an attention economy are we sometimes shooting ourselves in the foot by winning trust and “pulling consumer” with good tech and then driving them away, and for lack of a better sentence, pissing them off? Mmmm…. Maybe for the 1st gen of users but I’m sure it will filter down as time goes by, consumers will adapt to this new and innovative form of targeted advertising – With great power comes great responsibility, however lets just hope online marketers know how good they got it and use this platform to bring benefit to consumers rather than Geo-spam them.
Uno De Waal added these pithy words on Jun 24 09 at 2:08 pmYeah I agree that I think it’s a bit shit to monetize with advertising, but it’s sometimes the only option. Although I do actually prefer targeted ads over non-targeted ads – what’s that thing that when advertising becomes so good, it becomes a recommendation? I like that

Anon-ThewayIlikeit added these pithy words on Jun 24 09 at 2:59 pmShit yeah, completely agree – but its not going to be targeted by person as much as location. And if The GRID is doing a google, and observing consumers private interaction and targeting them accordingly by their communication on the GRID, well thats the problem for me, and why I wont be on it. Lets face facts too – The GRID was conceptualized as an ad platform – not with honest intentions at all, its a great ad platform idea. Taking Facebook a set farther, well two or three steps farther. It seems that most great ideas are add funded unfortunately, and if they aren’t funded they become funded eventually. Twitter is a great example of a purist idea – no ads! Yet!

Catchy music though.

Apart from trying to over analyze the product/client and bitch about it, what do you think of the actual execution of the ad by Cow?
Anon-ThewayIlikeit added these pithy words on Jun 25 09 at 9:19 am@griffin – Ha ha Only bitching here was your post and if you have some kind of comment that can add to the conversation it would be great besides trying to negate the comments and entice an answer you think you warrant. The “bitching” are actual concerns that some ppl do have about advertising hence the massive shift is consumerism and drop in consumer confidence, but considering you are more interested in with the creative execution than the social implications, we’ll play your game – I think it does a pretty kick-ass job of putting the product into the lives of its consumers visually. All the right elements of The GRID were shown in use – the mobile interface looked very dam cool, the cast was an accurate representation of the populous. I like Cow’s work – especially Framed with Zoopy – thought it was a great idea. They are doing some innovative stuff, and I think it would be stupid to do anything other than support a growing local company.

Thanks, just double checking. Right under the Between 10 and 5 logo it says “The Creative Showcase”. Maybe the guys should change it to “Actual concerns about advertising” and let people rant from 10am to 5pm.
anon added these pithy words on Jun 25 09 at 11:41 amMy username is anon .. its seems to be all the rage these days..
I thought the ad was long and drawn out and a bit predictable. And i didn’t see any really punchline or story line. But that’s just me and as ANON i can say anything lame and confrontational and hide behind this awesome mask! hooray for the internet and my important opinion.
Im not even in design, im an accountant on my lunch break. So i don’t have a URL for you guys to look at ( news24.com maybe?), i just like coming here and ripping everyone’s work off.
Charles added these pithy words on Jun 25 09 at 11:42 amTo be fair, I don’t believe that The Grid was ever conceptualised as an ad platform per se, but rather as a social network that would to some extent be ad-supported. As for LBS advertising, personally I think it has some exciting opportunities in terms of relevant advertising i.e. showing me ads that might appeal to me because it’s from a local vendor/deal in my area – as opposed to a generic ad in, let’s say, The Sunday Times. Disclaimer: I work at Cow.
Anon-ThewayIlikeit added these pithy words on Jun 25 09 at 12:44 pm@griffin – Wow dude, serious comment Nazi. I have tended to notice the creative showcase positioning of between 10 and 5, but I do feel that I can also comment on the product the creative work is doing the job for. Without the product, you have no commercial creative work to showcase. So thanks for double checking and just ignore my comments
@charles You’re right, I’m in no position to claim I know the platforms original conception plans, I was just assuming looking at the way most online networks that are ad supported come to be. I do believe great ideas do need to happen and advertising does help them materialize. And as I agreed with Uno above I think targeted is much better than non targeted, just hope it doesn’t lead to a consumer revolt if done badly. But back to the creative work since this is a creative showcase – great job with the TVC – looks great, does a fantastic job of showing the situational use of the product and its key attributes & connected with the TM, very very cool. Nice one
